About Cheney
The City of Cheney is located in Spokane County and residential life in Cheney can best be described as a family oriented based on a grand foundation of education. Named for Boston railroad tycoon Benjamin Pierce Cheney, Cheney was officially incorporated on November 28, 1883 and is now home to Eastern Washington University and Cheney School District #360. The Cheney community is steeped in academics and noted statewide for its high quality K-12 educational system. The Cheney community is growing at a healthy pace and offers large city access, downtown Spokane and the Spokane International Airport are only 15 minutes away
Cheney is proud of its small town nature, which is enhanced by the diverse influence of Eastern Washington University, a public regional university with over 10,000 full time students. The Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League have held the majority of their summer training camps at EWU, from 1976-1985, and again from 1997 through the 2006 training camp. Eastern Washington University is, of course, the centerpiece of Cheney’s academic and cultural environment.
Recreation and community
Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is five (5) miles south of Cheney, which encompasses approximately 16,000 acres of the “Channeled Scablands”, an area formed by glacial floods at the end of the last ice age. Needless to say, this area has numerous hiking trails and a motorized trail for viewing wildlife and aquatic areas.
Cheney also has dozens of lakes and numerous ski resorts and golf courses within easy driving distance.
The Cheney community is very fortunate to have many outdoor recreational amenities available close by for a wide variety of recreational interests.
•Cheney has 40 acres of municipal developed park land which includes an outdoor swimming pool, many playgrounds and picnic areas, as well as athletic fields.
•In the immediate surrounding area, there are many lakes and streams for fishing, boating and swimming.
•There is a 3.5 mile paved recreational trail immediately adjacent to Cheney for bicyclists, roller blades and walking.
